Feel very very royal this evening - Lamakaan is recreating the Delhi Durbar's leisure period.

The Warsi Brothers will be singing some sufi ghazals penned by the great saint Amir Khusro, on 11th November, at Lamakaan.

The Warsi Brothers

The Warsi brothers - Ahmed Khan Warsi and Zaheer Ahmed Khan Warsi - are Hyderabad-based Qawwali singers, and are the direct descendants of the the legendary Allam-e-Mosiqui Mohammed Siddiq Khan and Qutub Baksh Miyan Tanras Khan (who was the court singer to Bahadur Shah Zafar). They have kept the qawwali tradition alive by accommodating multiple genres including Dhrupad and Khyal roots, especially those composed by Hyderabadi poets. They have performed in various Sufi festivals in India, and also in Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius abroad.

The brothers belong to the Old Delhi Gharana of Hindustani music. The brothers got their first lessons in music from their father Ustad Zaheer Ahmed Khan, and grandfather Padmasri Aziz Ahmed Khan. The family goes by the name of Qawwal Bachchon Ka Gharana, and traces its lineage to Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia and Hazrat Amir Khusrau, who are said to have adapted Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's qawwali and taught it to 12 initiates - or the first Qawwal Bachche - to spread the spirit of Sufism.

Amir Khusro

Amir Khusro Dehlavi or Amir Khusro Balkhi is one of the most celebrated of Indian poets. Amir Khusro is credited for creating the "Khayal" of Hindustani classical music, and also the creation of qawwalis on the lines of bhajans. He also founded the language 'Hindvi', by the amalgamation of Persian and Bhojpuri words.

Khusro's qawallis celebrate Holi, Bahar (Spring), Sawan (Monsoon), love and devotion. His poetry has enthralled almost 7 generations of rulers of the Delhi Sultanate, and many of his poems are used even today in Hindustani classical as bandishes, and as ghazals by ghazal singers.

Entry is by donor passes of Rs. 50 per head, available at the venue. Please contact 96427-31329 for further details.
